During the summer i had an internship at kaiser permanent hospital. It was a 6 week internship with a development of training. The purpose of the internship was to expose teenagers to a more expanded variety of medical fields and enhance our knowledge. towards the end we had a recognition lunch in and was given a certificate of a outstanding behavior and completion. On the certificated it has the completion of hours and a signature of commitment.
The internship consisted of 4 hours a day without weekends. Out of almost 200 applicants, 50 were admitted and got the opportunity of a life time. I got to shadow the doctors (dermatologist) on the daily basis and i was also the translator from Spanish to English. I was able to attend minor surgery with the consent of the patients and got to meet a lot of new people. When i went to a different department i was able to discharge patients and was told amazing life stories of how they got to where they were. I was in charge of the both the intern committed so i made a couple new friends a long the way. For every small deed i did, it went a long way and that is why i smiled the whole time.
There was once an elderly Japanese woman eating alone in the cafeteria, asking for help barley knowing any English and had just gotten out of optic surgery. Luckily i know very little and understood her weeping. I helped her call her daughter, helped her walk step by step across the building and walked her all the way out of the parking lot across the street. On the way there she gave me her life story and how she used to have the worst and most expensive medical attention where she had came from. She had told me that it is people like me that help her through the day. As we walked out she gave me a prayer and a soda and said she would never forget me. It is things like this that make me want to make the world a better place.
I did the most that i can do being an intern to help the patients first hand or help the doctors so they can help their patients. I'd help sort out disease templates and keep check of the inventory. I even miss working the kiosk machine in which i just help people check in to their appointment, and making sure some individuals know they dont pay the co-payment. When i get older i want to become a dermatologist and provide little to no cost of my service. This opportunity is what motivated me to a greater extent. I will become a dermatologist and i will help out my community.
